What’s easier to follow and get results faster, a zig zag or a straight line? Of course, it’s a straight line.

In our autism recovery journeys, we parents often zig zag around looking for answers from various practitioners and therapists, internet searches, and purchasing random supplements we’ve heard about, but don’t know how to use properly.

Detoxification, while essential for health and recovery, can be challenging. Here are strategies to stabilize during this process for a smoother journey and better outcomes in autism recovery.

Seek Guidance From Someone Who Has Knowledge about the Specifics of Autism

After a decade of research and a lot of implementation to find what worked, today my son’s symptoms of autism are gone. This is after the so-called ‘experts’ told me it wasn’t possible.

Having a guide that has personally lived through it with success is important too.

Have a specific plan that is unique to autism

There are very unique issues and sensitivities involved in autism recovery. We cannot assume that every professional knows what to do. In fact, on my own autism journey with my son I found doctors didn’t really know what to do so I began researching on my own.

Have a Step-By-Step Roadmap to Follow

Have a roadmap to follow. There is so  much wasted time and expense we all go through to get all of our child’s needs met. We see one practitioner for one thing and another for something else. No one seemed to have it all in one place, or any complete guide. There can be so many missing pieces. This ends in little to no results for your child, and exhaustion for you as a parent. A tailored detox plan considering the needs specific to autism is crucial.

Be sure your roadmap has a solid foundation for detoxification, so you know what you’re doing and that what you’re doing is done safely. Detoxification pathways must be stabilized and supplements such as toxin binders need to be implemented from the beginning. Children with autism have very poor detoxification pathways and their liver (the organ of detoxification) is congested. Their toxic load is extremely high and the gut is ill so these must be stabilized and strengthened first for safety. Otherwise, the child can get much worse.

Move Forward Slowly

I cannot emphasize this enough. Parents get eager to get results faster so they will often override the need to go slowly. Especially for children with autism, we need to begin a new supplement at as little as one drop of a liquid, or a sprinkle of a powder supplement. Do this for 3 days, as you watch for symptoms of die-off which include worsening behaviors, losing sleep, reduction in speech, fever, rash, and anything else you notice.

Beware of Die-Off Reactions

Know what die off reactions look like and when to slow down.If any symptoms arise, then reduce dosages for a few days until symptoms subside before resuming again at the same smallest possible dosage. This can be a one step forward, one step back process and it is very slow, but it may very well need to be this slow. You are still making progress. In fact, this can be faster than if you go too fast and then have to stop everything because your child has gone into a severe die off reaction or a PANS flare up where their immune system has become overactive and symptoms become excessive and take longer to bring back to stability.

Hydration

Water Intake: Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and prevents dehydration. Water must be from a pure water source with a quality water filter. NEVER drink unfiltered tap water. It is loaded with as many as 300 toxic chemicals. Hydration helps the body to flush out toxic waste from the cells and can assist with reducing the effects of detoxification or die off reactions.

Electrolytes

Balance your intake with electrolytes to maintain energy levels and proper body function. Minerals, including trace minerals, are essential in hydrating cells and helping to flush out the toxins. Even these helpful supplements should be started at half to one quarter their regular dosage to minimize die off reactions. As the cells begin to release toxins then the body must flush them out. If the detoxification pathways and the gut have not been strengthened and supported properly then symptoms can get worse. In this case, slow down again as mentioned before.

Nutrition

Always go organic. Our children with autism cannot handle more toxins such as pesticides and other toxic chemicals from foods. The toxic chemical Glyphosate is sprayed on the wheat crops and livestock eats from crops sprayed so it’s in their meat. These foods and chemicals tear the gut lining up more. We need to heal the gut from this damage and get rid of the excess bad bacteria such as candida that bore holes in the gut lining. Please get my free food guide to the top 7 foods to eliminate from your child’s diet today to begin seeing positive changes in health and behaviors.

Diet changes alone can trigger die off reactions as the bad bacteria stop getting fed the bad foods that allow them to thrive, so be sure the toxin binders and detoxification pathways are getting the support they need. We reduce the fruit intake in the beginning, so their sugars are not feeding the bad bacteria.

Consume a diet rich in vegetables, but watch quantities to be sure digestion is working well with fiber. Also important are organic proteins such as grass fed beef, line caught fish and organic poultry, and good fats such as olive oil and coconut oil. Know that as your child’s body is still strengthening that their liver and gallbladder are weak. This can cause poor digestion, especially poor fat digestion. This means that even the good fats need to be started at low quantities to be sure that they do not feel sick. Beware of triggering foods such as those with histamines, oxalates, and phenols, as they can cause anxiety, and loss of sleep.

Avoid Triggers

Environmental Control: Stay away from environments or situations that may trigger cravings or stress. Avoid the bad foods in my food guide, pesticides, unfiltered tap water, toxic chemicals in your home cleaning and health care products, and make sure your home is mold free, as mold biotoxins keep your child ill. Get electromagnetic field protection.

Rest and Sleep

Ensure you get enough sleep to allow your body to heal and regenerate.

Incorporate rest periods throughout the day to avoid overexertion. Fatigue is common during detoxification. The body is working very hard to flush out those toxins.

Physical Activity

Moderate Exercise: Engage in light to moderate physical activities like walking or yoga to boost circulation and reduce stress.

Avoid Intense Workouts: During detoxification, avoid high-intensity exercises that can strain the body.

Mindfulness and Stress Management

Meditation: Practice meditation or deep-breathing exercises to calm the mind.

Therapy: Seek therapy or counseling to address emotional and psychological aspects of detox.

Support System

Surround yourself with supportive loved ones who can offer encouragement and assistance. Sometimes family is not as supportive as we need or they just don’t understand the challenges of autism. Having a community of support with like-minded parents who have children of their own with autism can be very helpful where you can share experiences and receive support from others going through similar journeys.

Monitor Progress

In my membership program I always have parents keep a journal to track their child’s physical and emotional state throughout the detox process. We will often forget just how our child was once upon a time when we’ve come along on the autism journey. Looking back at past symptoms that have improved or even disappeared can be helpful, especially during die off reactions that feel like you’re not making progress when you have.

Patience and Compassion

Be Patient: Understand that detoxification is a gradual process and requires time.

Children with autism need compassion when they are going through difficult times. Sensory overload is very common and during detoxification they can be excessive with extra die-off reactions. Quiet, calm space is important for them. Noise canceling headphones can also help.

Have self-compassion. Be kind to yourself and acknowledge the efforts you are making for your child and how hard you’ve worked, and are working. Be sure to take care of yourself on this journey too. It’s not always an easy one, so get support!

By incorporating these strategies, you can stabilize during detoxification, ensuring a smoother journey and a more successful outcome.
