Autism and Recovering The Gut
Recovering the gut is the first thing to do to begin reducing or removing the symptoms of autism. Many children with autism have a common problem; the lining of the digestive tract has often developed holes due to poor diet, candida/yeast overgrowth, or medications including antibiotics. When there are holes in the gut it is known as “leaky gut”. This term comes from the fact that the intestinal lining is now permeable and undigested foods are able to pass through it into the bloodstream. This can cause chaos when these toxins reach the brain.
These toxins are also the cause of many developed food allergies. Undigested proteins are the biggest problem. We commonly see that people have developed an allergy to gluten (the protein in wheat), and casein (the protein in dairy). Children with autism must have their gut recovered in order to repair their brain and their behaviors!
Besides the gut recovery diet there are essential supplements that assist in recovering autism and the gut such as probiotics, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D3 and the B vitamins (especially vitamin B12, methylcobalamin).
One more supplement that is often overlooked, but essential when recovering the gut is glutamine. Glutamine will assist in repairing the holes in the lining of the gut. The product Glutagenics by Metagenics contains L-glutamine which is critical in helping repairing the gut’s intestinal lining. Glutagenics is a sweet tasting powder so it is easy to give to children with autism. Glutagenics also contains deglycyrrhizinized licorice root to help soothe the digestive tract, and aloe leaf extract (laxative properties removed) which helps to relieve inflammation. One teaspoon three times per day is helpful for adults. Children may need half that. Muscle test for dosage. This is sold at most health food stores or can be purchased at most online sites such as www.pureformulas.com.
