Multiple Needs

One mom wrote in this week asking how you know what brain supplements to give your child when their symptoms seem to fall into more that one category. I Multiple needs for supplementationwill elaborate on the answer here, since there are probably many mom’s who have this same question. Whether it is for autism, ADD or other behavioral needs, supplements for behavioral symptoms do often overlap.

Brain Scans

Brain scans are a good way to get specific information about your child’s needs and take away the guessing game. The Amen Clinic, does phone consultations without scans for those who have pressing questions or who are considering the option of having a SPECT brain scan done for their child. Please use the referral code “Karen Thomas” when you call to get a 10% discount on any evaluations and SPECT imaging scans, (866)260-8227.

Another option is Neuroquant, a brain scan that is more affordable for many at only $96.00, but it only measures brain volume to check which areas are larger and which may show shrinkage.  For more information on Neuroquant, visit www.radnet.com,  or call 800-975-4674.

Beyond brain scans, we can use supplements based on individual symptoms. Before we had my son’s brain scan done through the Amen Clinic, I had put him on several natural supplements based on what I knew his needs were. As it turned out, the clinic suggested most of the same ones for him based on his brain scan. I had been on the right track, but needed to add in a couple more supplements that would increase the results, and  increase the dosage level of one.

Universal Needs

I personally believe that all people, with or without autism, also need enough quality omega 3 fatty acids, vitamin D, B vitamins, (especially METHYL B 12), and magnesium every day to assist stabilizing the brain and mood. It is also crucial to have enough exercise and a healthy diet without preservatives, toxic chemicals, and food dyes to disrupt one’s brain. Sugar, dairy and wheat should be kept to an absolute minimum. (Frankly, it would be best to avoid them altogether.) Take caution, because here come the holidays!
