Lyme disease is on the rise. One in every four children on the autism spectrum tests positive for Lyme disease. It is the fastest growing vector born infection with 300,000 new cases per year. This number is said to likely be an underestimate. It continues to be under diagnosed due to the center for Disease Control’s inadequate established bands or markers used for detection in blood tests.
Lyme disease is usually contracted through a tick bite. some of these ticks can be as small as a poppy seed and go unnoticed. Lyme can be passed in utero from a mother to her child, as well as in breast milk. Lyme can also be passed from mosquitoes and head lice.
Symptoms of Lyme disease (which can also mimic other disorders):
- Attention deficit disorder (ADD)
- Learning difficulties
- Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)
- Increase in oppositional behavior
- Abdominal pain
- Night sweating
- Possible fever or flu-like symptoms
- Frequent urination
- Sudden onset of sleep disturbance
- Joint pain
- Neck pain
- Difficulty breathing
- Dry cough
- Sole of foot pain
- Visual problems
- Poor balance
- Hand flapping
- Emotional withdrawal
- Reduced social participation
- red/purple stretch marks (can be anywhere on the body)
- Bell’s Palsy (facial drooping)
- Multiple sclerosis
- Chronic fatigue
- Heart conditions
TESTING FOR LYME
As mentioned above, detecting Lyme through the standard “blot” blood test is minimal, at best. It is common to get a false negative. This means the blood test tells you that you do not have it when you actually do. So what do you do?
Best practice is to wait until your child’s gut is healthy, toxins have been reduced greatly, and his immune system is strong before testing. Tick analysis as it is not a reliable method, although it is used for supportive information sometimes. Currently the resource is www.tickchek.com, but it is preferred to go with a clinical diagnosis over what a tick checking lab says the tick has. Labs should always come secondary to patient symptoms.
The bacteria that cause Lyme disease can keep changing form and re-infect. Each must be treated specifically. Multiple infections suppress the immune system, so multiple systems must be treated. Lyme decreases immunity so secondary fungal, bacterial, and viral infections appear. This happens even easier if heavy metals and toxins are in the system.
Do not use traditional methods of heavy metal detoxification such as DMSA or EDTA when Lyme is present. Mercury can inhibit Lyme. If a heavy metal detoxification process allows re-absorption of toxins back into the body during the excretion process, like these chelators do, then the mercury released into the system may activate the Lyme disease. Lyme has multiple co-infections. It is systemic, gets into the intestines, and makes you intolerant of carbohydrates and develop a sensitivity to gluten, casein, and sugar.
Lyme infection does not leave easily and multiple systems are affected. Antibiotics alone have been disappointing in the treatment of Lyme disease. Autism and Lyme commonly exist in one individual. A broad based treatment which affects all co-infections and assists the body on multiple levels is necessary. Gut healing, nutritional therapies, detoxification of heavy metals and clearing all pathogens all need to be reviewed, so that you can may make educated decisions for your child.
You will need help. Not all doctors are fully informed on the proper treatment of this disease. We work with all coinfections naturally and safely in the Naturally Recovering Autism membership program using proprietary organic herbal formulas that were specifically formulated for each coinfection including mold, Lyme, PANS/strep, and parasites. Since these herbal formulas are safe and most kids with autism have these coinfections, I believe it is not necessary to spend your resources testing for them if using these herbals because they are broad spectrum and will help support the systems of the body, regardless. Let symptoms be your guide.

What is your data that says it is transmitted in utero and through breast milk? I would like to read the studies and look at the parameters for that studies.
There are many studies on this. Most can be found at Klighardtacademy.org or on pubmed.com
