Keep track of the lunar cycle each month and observe whether your child’s symptoms, or your own, intensify in the days leading up to and following the full moon. [This is podcast episode #205].
The full moon has long been associated with a range of mysterious phenomena, from sleep disturbances to heightened emotions. But one of the more intriguing aspects is that full moons can increase parasite activity in humans. Is there any truth to this claim, or is it just another lunar myth?
Let’s explore how the moon’s phases, particularly the full moon, might impact the behavior of parasites and what science has to say about it.
First Of All, How Do We Get Parasites?
Common ways we get parasites are from inhaling them from the air we breathe, in the food we eat, drinking water, swimming or bathing in contaminated water, and through our skin. Lesions in the skin, especially on the feet, allow for easy entrance into the body. Animals carry different parasites that they may pass onto humans. Plus, poor hygiene also plays a big role.
Understanding Parasites and Their Behavior
Parasites are organisms that live off a host, relying on them for nutrients and shelter. Human parasites include a range of organisms such as protozoa (like Giardia), helminths (such as tapeworms and roundworms), and external parasites like lice.
Their lifecycle often depends on factors such as environmental changes, the host’s immune system, and how many have noticed, even the lunar cycle.
While parasite infestations can go unnoticed for some time, they can lead to significant health issues, including gastrointestinal problems, fatigue, and weakened immune responses. Understanding how these organisms behave is crucial to preventing and managing infections.
The Connection Between the Moon and Biological Rhythms
The moon has a strong influence on many natural phenomena on Earth, most notably the ocean tides. This gravitational pull is believed to also affect living organisms, particularly those sensitive to environmental cues like light, temperature, and tidal changes.
When I was in labor with my son I was told there were over a dozen other women in the hospital at the same time. I asked why so many at once? The doctor said, “The full moon.”
She told me it’s called ‘latent phase labor’ and that the moon’s gravitational pull is thought to cause it. Although there is no statistical association found to support this, she said she sees it every month.
It is also reported that more women do go into labor with a change in barometric pressure during an incoming storm, so it makes some sense that we could also be effected by a full moon phase.
For centuries, humans have speculated that the full moon influences human behavior, emotions, and even health conditions. Some research supports the idea that the lunar cycle can influence sleep patterns and mental health. But what about parasites?
How Full Moons Might Affect Parasite Activity
The theory that the full moon increases parasite activity is based on a few key ideas:
- Circadian Rhythms and Parasites
Many organisms, including parasites, are influenced by circadian rhythms—biological cycles that are tied to the day-night cycle. Some parasites may become more active during certain times of day or night.
Proponents of the full-moon theory suggest that the increased light during a full moon disrupts circadian rhythms, causing certain parasites to become more active or aggressive.
- Gravitational Pull and Fluid Shifts
Just as the moon’s gravitational pull affects ocean tides, some believe it could influence bodily fluids in humans. This theory suggests that the movement of fluids in the body during a full moon could create an environment where parasites thrive, leading to increased symptoms like digestive upset, fatigue, or itchy skin.
- Lunar Influence on Reproduction
Some parasites have life cycles that are synchronized with environmental cues, such as lunar phases. For example, certain marine parasites reproduce during full moons, when tides are highest.
While this is more commonly observed in aquatic organisms, some speculate that parasites in humans may follow a similar pattern, becoming more active or reproductive during a full moon.
The Science Behind It: What Does Research Say?
Despite the popularity of the idea, scientific evidence directly linking full moons to increased parasite activity in humans is limited. However, there are a few studies that lend some support to the theory:
- Marine Parasites and Lunar Phases
In marine ecosystems, the lunar cycle is known to influence the behavior of certain parasites. For instance, the reproductive cycles of some fish parasites are timed with lunar phases to coincide with high tides. This suggests that some parasites are indeed sensitive to lunar rhythms, but whether this applies to human parasites remains uncertain.
- Human Behavior and Immune System Changes
Some studies suggest that the full moon can influence human behavior, particularly sleep. Poor sleep is linked to a weakened immune system, which could potentially allow parasites to thrive. If the full moon disrupts sleep patterns, it could indirectly affect the body’s ability to fight off parasitic infections.
- Traditional Beliefs and Alternative Medicine
In alternative medicine, many practitioners believe that parasites are more active during full moons. Some detox protocols recommend timing parasite cleanses with the lunar cycle, based on the idea that parasites are more vulnerable during these periods. While not scientifically proven, many people report experiencing more noticeable symptoms of parasitic infections during a full moon, such as digestive discomfort or itching.
Managing Parasite Infections: Paying Attention to the Moon?
Whether or not you believe the full moon affects parasite activity, there’s no doubt that parasites can cause serious health issues if left untreated. Here are some steps to manage and prevent parasitic infections:
- Practice Good Hygiene
Wash your hands regularly, especially before eating and after using the bathroom. Parasites can spread easily through contaminated food, water, or surfaces.
- Be Cautious with Food and Water
Ensure that your food is cooked properly and avoid drinking untreated water, especially if you’re traveling to areas with known parasite risks.
- Consider Timing Parasite Cleanses
Timing a parasite cleanse with the full moon can be very helpful because the parasites are more active and vulnerable during this time. Better results are often reported by aligning detox efforts with the lunar cycle. Although we know proper detoxification takes much more than one lunar cycle!
- Monitor Symptoms
Keep track of the lunar cycle each month and observe whether your child’s symptoms, or your own, intensify in the days leading up to and following the full moon.
Some Symptoms of Parasites To Look For:
- #1 symptom: Chronic constipation
- Teeth grinding
- Hair pulling
- Sinus issues
- Craving sugar
- Itchy skin
- Anger and ‘crazy-type’ behaviors
- Brain fog
- Chronic fatigue (often wake tired).
- Diarrhea
- Mouthing, chewing or drooling
- Hungry all the time. The parasites eat the nutrition from the food we eat, so the body will be hungry because it’s craving nutrition it’s not getting.
What Problems Do Parasites Cause?
The problems caused by parasites do not come so much from the bugs themselves, but from the existing co-infections in the body. Parasites bring with them bacteria, viruses and fungi. Viruses in the nervous system often come from Staphylococcus and lungworm.
When parasites are present the immune system is even weaker and the body more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections. Parasites often live inside the mucosa of the intestinal lining, but are capable of living outside of the intestines.
Leaky gut syndrome allows parasites access into the bloodstream. Once outside of the intestines, they can travel to various organs, including the brain. One more of the many reasons why we need to heal up leaky gut. Adult parasites lay eggs which have a nine month gestation period, so parasite protocols should be repeated every nine months to kill the new young parasites when they hatch.
Stay on top of these parasites. They lay eggs and are cyclic so it is to be worked with ongoing. When the eggs hatch you want to be sure they do not get a chance to grow and do harm again.
A Quick Note On Testing For Parasites
Parasite testing is very inaccurate because parasites are able to hide themselves, and many are microscopic in size. Tests often show up negative when you or your child are actually positive for them, and they go untreated.
For these reasons, I advocate using symptoms as your guide. Most parasites are also antibiotic resistant, so it is important to seek natural resources.
If you notice symptoms of a parasitic infection worsening during the full moon, then take action! Whether the full moon plays a role or not, managing parasitic infections is critical to maintaining your own health and the health of your family.
Do You Need Help?
In order for parasitic infections to be cleared the liver must be cleansed and the intestinal tract must be healthy. A continued diet follows that is rich in alkaline foods to help prevent lingering infections.
In my program we use safe, all-natural resources with a combination of healing the gut, strengthening the detoxification pathways including the liver since parasites are an illness associated with liver congestion, and we use natural elixirs and herbals formulated to target parasites and other coinfections of autism.
My parasite protocol will also assist in fighting Lyme. It is important to be aware that Lyme lives inside of parasites, so working with both together is important.
