The All-Important Hypothalamus
The hypothalamus is the part of our brain that tells our nervous system if we should feel calm or fearful. This is commonly known as the fight or flight response. The hypothalmus is often injured in children on the autism spectrum. The hypothalamus has no protective blood-brain barrier, making it easy for toxins to enter this area and cause damage. A few known environmental toxins are mercury, aluminum, and bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical found in plastics such as drinking bottles, baby bottles, toys, dental sealants and the linings of food cans. Mold biotoxins are also a top offender.
The hypothalamus holds within it the areas responsible for aggression, territorial defense, and sexual pursuit. It also controls sleep and appetite cycles along with the limbic system (another part of the brain). Estrogen receptors in the hypothalamus effect food intake, energy, and the distribution of body fat.
Two Neurochemicals You Should Know
The hypothalamus is part of both the endocrine system and the nervous system and is responsible for messages between the two. The hypothalamus releases many neurochemicals including:
- Dopamine: a neurotransmitter affecting reward-based motivation, decision-making, ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, restless leg syndrome, lack of focus and motor control. It also affects a part of the brain called the pre-frontal cortex. The pre-frontal cortex controls executive functioning such as the ability to see consequences for our actions and organizational planning. It is a big issue for people on the autism spectrum.
- Oxytocin: released via the pituitary as a part of hypothalamic functioning. Oxytocin is the hormone involved with the ability to bond with others, especially the mother after birth.
How Can We Help the Hypothalamus?
What can we do to assist the hypothalamus?
Zinc, vitamin D3, proper iodine levels and exercise are crucial to the proper functioning of the hypothalamus.
Scientists have found that gut bacteria produce neurotransmitters such as serotonin, and dopamine. Up tp 95% of serotonin is made in the gut. The gut must be healthy for adequate amounts to be produced and transfer properly to the brain.
There is an excellent product called Stress Reducer Elixir that may increase oxytocin and serotonin levels naturally . This comes as tasteless sublingual drops.
Your Unborn Child’s Exposure To Toxins
It goes without saying that you should do your best to avoid toxins around your children and during pregnancy. When a mother is exposed to environmental toxins during pregnancy the fetus is directly affected. The liver is our main organ of detoxification. When it is congested and not working properly, then bile and toxins are frequently pushed back into the stomach. The cells become injured and weak and are then more susceptible to damage from pathogenic microbes such as candida, parasites, H. Pylori, and more.
These pathogenic bacteria then cause inflammation in the gut which weakens the lining and even breaks holes through it. This is known as leaky gut. Leaky gut allows for undigested foods and other toxins to leak into the bloodstream causing inflammation throughout the body and brain. The behaviors we see are due to many factors but they all include inflammation and its effect on the central nervous system and the brain in particular.
It’s Never Just One Thing Alone
Parents often ask me what a specific symptoms their child has are caused from. As there are some that can be a bit more obvious as possibilities I always have to remind them that it’s never just one or two things, but a multitude of them and all must be worked with. It’s why when I created my program I made sure to cover the A-Z of autism recovery, so nothing important gets missed and their child does not reach their optimum level of recovery. Each child deserves to reach their full potential and this means striving to alleviate the uncomfortable symptoms of autism. For some they are debilitating.
Supplements to help the gut heal are important, but diet is the first conscious change we can make to directly impact our health. By reducing inflammatory foods we help to strengthen the gut and its lining. This in turn assists the gut in making brain messengers called neurotransmitters that help our brain function with such things as mood stability, proper sleep, and focus and concentration.
Diet is extremely important. Get the guide to the top 7 foods to eliminate and slowly remove them from your child’s diet, but also remember that diet alone is not enough.
Many parents have learned about gluten and casein and their inflammatory agents that cause behavioral issues in their child. These come from the biological effects they have on the body and they need to be removed along with other inflammatory foods. However, remember that it is never just one thing alone that causes your child’s behaviors. Diet is an important place to begin to help set the foundation for overall better health, but there are other factors which keep your child’s gut and brain toxic and prevent them from getting better.
Additional pathogens and infections to be aware of that injure the gut and brain are glyphosate (in the weed killer roundup) which is sprayed on our food crops and in the yards of our neighbors, heavy metal toxins which wreak havoc on the gut and the neurological system, Mold Biotoxins from water damaged buildings affect multiple systems of the body including the hormonal system and they cross the blood brain barrier. Lyme disease which is prevalent in autism, and parasites. These can also trigger autoimmune issues that attack the brain leaving our child with extreme behaviors.
Die Off Symptoms
When pathogens such as candida “dies off” it releases toxins that can enter the bloodstream. This is also known as Herxheimer’s reaction. It means that the liver cannot keep up with filtering out the toxic waste being released by the dying pathologic organisms. This can cause headaches, fatigue, flu-like symptoms. Some people also experience either diarrhea or constipation. There may be heightened emotional outbursts or hyperactivity.
This actually is a good sign that the candida and pathogens are dying. However, if the symptoms are too intense, reduce the dosages of anything you’re giving your child and the amount of supplements for a couple of days or until symptoms subside. This gives the body a chance to “catch up”. We don’t want them spiraling into further problems. Be aware that the diet alone can cause these symptoms because the candida are not being fed the sugars and processed carbohydrates that they need, so they die. Again, it’s what we want but we don’t want it to go too fast and we must support the detoxification process as we do this. All too often I see parents being given a handful of supplements and told to go home and give them to their child without any further education or guidance. This is wrong!
Stay With The Detoxification and Die Off Process
The detoxification and die off process is slow, but there really is no alternative. Give the process time, stay consistent, and keep with the protocol as long as is needed, also being sure you’re on the right protocol and it covers the A-Z of autism recovery. Autism recovery can take several years, so be patient.
Eventually, as toxins and pathogens are eliminated — and as other fundamental issues are corrected through diet and supplements — you will be able to get your child’s body and brain healthy, and functioning as well as possible.
Mentioned in this podcast is the importance of a quality water filter to be sure the heavy metals, glyphosate and other harmful toxins in tap water are removed. The Aquatru water filter does all of this and more. Use this link to take you to the Aquatru and to get my discount code for it too!

Quickly Reduce Your Child’s Symptoms of Autism by Eliminating 7 Foods Most People Consume Daily!
The first crucial step of autism recovery is to begin restoring health to the gut and the immune system.
The health of the gut is directly linked to the health of the brain and therefore to the symptoms of autism. In fact, 80% of the immune system comes from the gut so if the gut is not healthy, then the brain can’t thrive, and the immune system is compromised. It’s a vicious cycle, but thankfully, it’s one that we can put an end to by first eliminating harmful foods.
- Harmful Foods: Identify the foods that worsen autism symptoms and understand the science behind their impact.
- Smart Food Choices: Learn about easy dietary swaps that can significantly enhance sleep, clarity of thought, and emotional well-being.
- Practical Implementation: Get valuable tips on how to implement these dietary changes easily and effectively.
This is for informational purposes only and is not meant to diagnose or treat. Every child’s level of recovery is different. No two people are the same. It is never implied that all children will have the same outcome. Results are all based on individual biology and the work that is done. This process takes time and various steps, effort and resources need to be weighed. Our programs are intended to help you become more knowledgeable and guide you to help bring your child a better quality of life, whatever that may be.
